Ron Santo on Jay Cutler

Jay Cutler or Jake Peavy?Yesterday, former Bears cornerback Jerry Azumah sang the seventh-inning stretch at Wrigley Field, and prior to the song Cub radio commentator Ron Santo conducted a very entertaining interview with him.

Santo:  So you were a running back in college, why did you play defensive back in the pros?  Did you tell them you liked to play defensive back more?

Azumah:  Well, I guess they saw something in me as a defensive back.

I’m thinking:  Uh, Ron, a rookie wouldn’t have told the team where he was going to play, Mark Hatley converted Azumah to DB.

Santo:  Of course the biggest news for the Bears was trading for Jake Peavy in the offseason.

Azumah:  Uh huh.

I’m thinking:  Wow!  That would have been even bigger news than the Bears trading for Jay Cutler!

Santo:  How tall is Peavy?

Azumah:  I think he’s around 6’4″.

I’m thinking:  That’s great, but how tall is Jay Cutler?

This went on for a couple more questions about Cutler/Peavy, and Azumah never said anything about it.  It was funny.  I have no problem with crazy old uncle Ron; it was just entertaining.

  1. That is funny. My favorite Ron Santo piece was hearing him when Brant Brown dropped that fly ball at the end of the 1998 season that forced the Cubs to play a one game playoff with the Giants. Makes me laugh every time.

  2. Fantastic Photoshop job, I thought that was Jay Cutler for a second. :)
