Yep, and remember in 91 both Muster and Anderson had hamstring issues all season. Harbaugh was forced to do more than ever, and while he was no Joe Montana, he didn’t do that bad of a job. Hell, I will never forget the game against the 7-0 Saints where he couldn’t hit the right side of a barn the entire game. And yet, they still rallied and won the game.

On another note, I finally finished watching the 87 season. It only took me about 8 months. That divisional loss was just as I remember, badly wasted chance after wasted chance. And, McMahon sucked that game and had nothing on his throws.

I also remember the 41-0 game as we had a snow day the next morning. After the first quarter, my father stopped taping the game, and we went to bed.

Thanks Rob, I enjoyed this one, it flowed. Agree-that’s a good way of saying it-and I think you’re right. And given that after ’87 Gault, Marshall, Fencik and Payton were gone, that was a real watershed moment.

Great post. That 1987 blowout brings back very painful memories. For me, that was the “Jump the Shark” moment for the 80s Bears. From that point forward, I felt that the magic of the 85 season was gone.

I know Mike! (And thanks). Never did I think I could wish well for the 49ers or Moss. But I tell myself, I kind of enjoy watching THIS 49ers team play, with the great defense and really crazy interesting offense. Just too bad thinking what Harbaugh could have done with Cutler if he came on in 2010.

Great post, Roy. I also lament how good Harbaugh may have been with the Bears had he had decent tools to work with, as you mention. But unlike you, still don’t know if I can bring myself to root for the Niners. Those numerous embarrassments of the Bears: 1984 NFC Championship, 1987 loss, 1988 NFC Championship (at home), 1989, 1991, 1994 (division round), and 2003 run deep..
