To Plax, or not to Plax

I never would have believed it, given the Bears’ propensity to not associate with players that have checkered pasts, but the Plaxico Burress to the Bears talk is heating up.

Through Brad Biggs’ blog, several national analysts state that the Bears are one of three teams with serious interest in Burress.

I’ve made it clear in the past I didn’t want Burress in the 2000 draft, when Mark Hatley tried to trade up and select Burress instead of Brian Urlacher.¬† Every time the wideout has gotten into trouble in his career, I’ve been more and more glad of that.

But if Burress recovers from his self-inflicted gunshot wound to the thigh, if he is not suspended for the entire year by the NFL and if he’s not spending time in a penetentiary, I guess at this point he’d be a nice addition at receiver on a very cheap “prove you’re done with weapons” deal.

What do you think?

  1. I say bring him in. The only thing that worries me is how the Bears are making a ton of BIG free agent acquisitions. Correct me if I’m wrong but it seems any team that goes big on free agency ultimately ends up falling short of expectations. I’d look towards Washington on this front mainly.

  2. On a one year incentive laden deal, I say why not, bring in Plax. Actually I kind of hope they do, cause it would take some of the pressure off of Devin Hester. Yes, Hester made “strides” last year but in no way is he a legitimate #1 receiver at the moment. I feel like the Bears are pressing him to develop into that big play threat and as a result it affected his ability in the return (kickoff and punt) game. Bring in Plax and team him with Greg Olsen, Des Clark, Matt Forte, Hester and with Cutler on board, if that wouldn’t be an offense to light up the league I don’t know what would

  3. I am not a big fan of rolling the dice on these questionable-character guys, but I agree. Bring him in with a short-term, incentive-laden deal. That could be a potentially scary offense! That could take some pressure off the defense real quick. If the D made even some marginal improvements, think of the possibilities…

  4. All this sounds soo good…… Unless cutler pulls a tom brady.

  5. ….and becomes one of the best QB’s in the game? Or happens to get a freak injury? I’m hoping on the former and not the latter.
