So at this point, its sounding like the Bears are going to go all out to try and get Eric DeCosta from Baltimore. This is a guy who has been reluctant to leave Baltimore, and has been told by the owner of Baltimore that he is the heir apparent to the current GM there. Also, Baltimore's owner isnt exactly fond of the Bears for their draft blunder last year, though you could blame that entirely on Jerry Angelo if you want.

If they don't get DeCosta, looks like they will settle for someone from Atlanta. Not bad, but I rather have DeCosta, and I dont know why they aren't talking to anyone from the New YOrk Giants, who have done a great job drafting over the past few seasons. They even found Victor Cruz as a undrafted free agent.

I think jdm said things as well as I could say. I just don't see this being a big deal. Especially since there doesn't seem to be any indication that any of the top candidates out there really have a coach they want to bring in.

Also, remember that Jerry Angelo came in in pretty much the same situation--Jauron was the coach when he arrived. He clearly was able to fire Jauron, so I think any GM shouldn't worry about who has the power in the organization.

I think Lovie is a good coach, and an asset. I think it's worth keeping him, and that's just the way things have to go.

Overall, my glass is 3/4 full. I realize there are still ways this could go, but the feeling of accountability this is bringing is making me excited. I also like the names that are being floated--the guy from Green Bay, and I think I've heard we're looking at the Atlanta and Baltimore front offices, too--all good personnel departments. I like where this is going. Though I don't think I'll be fully calm until I know for sure Tim Ruskell is leaving.

Personally I'm excited to see what happens with the new hiring. While the Bears haven't been floundering under Angelo's watch, it always seemed like he just wasn't the answer. Now with the Bears having 4 picks in the first 3 rounds of the draft this year, the new GM can make an impact immediately. I'm with JDM, the new guy can fire Lovie next year if he wants....the only thing I worry about is the Bears have this window closing with Urlacher, Briggs, and Peppers all getting up in age. I guess we'll see how well the new GM will do in replacing those guys.

One thing is for sure, I'm glad Angelo won't have the opportunity to squander these high draft picks as he has been known to do.

Hey JDM, no sweat at all. You good readers can say anything you want, I have only banished that name from my keyboard-not yours. I meant to clarify that in the previous comment. Points in your comments well taken.

JDM, Always glad to get your input. Regarding the writer you mentioned, you've been reading here long enough to know that I will never mention or link to this writer again. This is a guy that has repeatedly called bloggers cowards, yet he lifted a tidbit from my bearshistory site that I'm extremely confident he only could have gotten from me, without attribution. If bloggers are idiots then who's the bigger idiot in this situation, the elitist that says one thing and then steals from the idiot? I'm proud of the fact that I have yet to mention or link to that person since that happened about three years ago, and that's the way things will remain. As I mentioned I do see the potential for this to be a positive, maybe Lovie is motivated by the situation and has a great year. That's obviously the hope. But yes I am also hopeful that if he tanks, the GM will be able to clean house. But it never fails to be a bit of a Twilight Zone at Halas Hall.

Personally, I think keeping Lovie for another year is way overblown. Oakland already has a coach in place. So, is McKinnze not going to want to go there? I also thought he didn't want to move out to Oakland. Interesting how money talks. Ted Thompson took the job in Green Bay knowing Mike Sherman was still the coach. Seattle also didn't have problems hiring a GM when Holmgren was still there. Most GMs will need a year to implement their system anyway. And, nothing said they can't fire Lovie is 2012 goes bad. Hub, who can be a major arrogant blowhard, also didn't think it was that big of a deal. Most of the media members can't stand Lovie anyway. Davis Haugh's pissy article Tuesday morning was priceless (although he did admit Lovie is a pretty good coach).

It really comes down to what the GM wants. Personally, I don't want the Polians. I think Bill is an awesome football guy, but I don't think too much of his son. It seems like Bill was semi-retired anyway. I would prefer a guy like McKinnie. As they say, if you can't beat your competition, become one of them.
