One more area of correction: speeding IS breaking the law. I had said he hadn't broken a law.

Actually, there's an article on Chicago sports that includes a clause from the last collective bargaining agreement. It seems to support the theory that theteam CAN cut Tank Johnson.

I hate to say it, but I'd be alright with the team letting Tank go. I was dicussing this issue with another football fan yesterday. We were trying to determine just what the infraction, if any, was that Tank made. So far, he's broken no laws. Yes, hanging out on an Arizona highway after 3 am seems a bit dumb for someone with as short a leash as Johnson, but he's done nothing wrong as of yet.

My friend was trying to make a case FOR Johnson since it's not a crime to be driving at 3:30 in the morning. I countered with the previous issues that have made Tank's "freedom" not quite as free as most people's.

I'm just not sure HOW Lovie Smith or Jerry Angelo would be able to justify keeping Johnson on the team even if no laws were broken given his agreement with the team and the league. Perhps there's a great explaination as to why Tank was out at that hour. If so, we'd all love to hear it.

I agree with the point you're making. The problem I believe is that the team can't release Tank due to this kind of conduct. The most the Bears can do is suspend him 4 games for conduct detrimental to the team. Under the same regulations, I believe Johnson cannot be cut whilst serving his 8 game suspension (or possibly entire season after these alleged occurrences). Johnson would be liable to file a personal grievance towards the team if they were to cut him now.
