The Roy Williams Uproar

On Monday night against the New York Giants, new Chicago Bears wide receiver Roy Williams seemingly caught a 16-yard pass, then jumped up to perform his signature, obnoxious first down signal.  Seconds later, I thought of a good friend of mine that hated Williams in both Detroit and Dallas when the replay showed Williams clearly dropped the ball.  Thing is, he KNEW he dropped the ball, yet he still performed his tired old antics.

As I have so many times before when the Bears have acquired players that failed elsewhere, I was hoping that Williams just had problems, whatever they were, at his other stops, and would work them out in Chicago.

But criticism for Williams is quickly mounting.  And if you listen to Dan McNeil, it’s already a circus.

What do you think?  Are you done with Williams already or think he might still have a chance to make a positive impact on the Bears?

One thing is good, at least the Bears didn’t give up a first round draft pick plus more to acquire him.

  1. I thoroughly believe that losing his roster spot to Johnny Knox could be the wake-up call that makes him pull his head out of his rear. He is currently having his last chance to show the NFL that he is a viable target and he is rapidly proving to everyone that he isn’t.

  2. I was really surprised when the Bears brought Williams on board, only because of his attitude/character issues. It seems like every time we roll the dice on one of these guys we come up a loser. I know that no one wants to give our receiving corps any credit, but I think we have some real quality guys with potential in Bennett, Knox, Hester and Sanzenbacher. I live in Ohio and am a life-time Buckeye fan, and I watched Sanzenbacher during his whole career at OSU. That MFer will catch ANYTHING thrown his way, and he is as tough as nails. I really hope he makes the final roster in some capacity. He could develop into a really reliable, clutch slot receiver. I think Hester, Knox, Bennett & Forte will really step up this year to help fill the void left by Olsen’s departure. Unfortunately, I don’t see Williams having much of an impact, but I really hope he proves me wrong. GO BEARS!

  3. McNeil’s a clown, but obviously a lot of what he’s saying really can’t be disputed. I said weeks ago that Williams has had only one good year in his career, and as has been documented by everyone, that was light years ago in 2006. Basically the Bears were going into this signing garbage picking again and hoping the stars aligned correctly and Williams would miraculously perform under the lights. But so far it’s just been babble, smack talk and drops, as usual. Way too early to just say he’s done, but the early indications sure don’t look good and new Roy looks just like old Roy, or Mike Williams or any of the other half dozen first round WR loser picks Millen pissed away over the years.

  4. Please Roy, get it together! You sir, look like a lazy bum out there. Go Bears, prove everyone wrong!!!

  5. It took me a minute, but thankfully I just realized that Shaun was calling Roy Williams lazy, not “this” Roy :) .

  6. I am still giving Roy (Williams) a chance here. I KNOW I’m going to hate everything he stands for within the next 6-8 weeks but I’m just reminding myself it’s the preseason and that hopefully something clicks in his stupid head. I actually talked about the same thing (his first round signal after he knowingly dropped the ball) on my new podcast (shameless plug). Click my name if you want to check it out.

  7. Can’t we get Brandon Lloyd back?
If the mere presence of call-me-Rashied Williams, (whether he’s competitive or obnoxious) can help us get the best out of Knox and the receivers, it’s still a good move. Plus, the guy has some experience and hopefully he can be some kind of mentor for the receivers.

I did not see the rationale in taking Williams when Buress was available. Buress has character issues but he’s going to be a he’ll of a lot more malleable after spending two years in prison. Buress played on a SB winner. What’s Roy done since 2006?

  9. LOL, Roy after I typed that out I thought I sounded the same way.

  10. Kidding Shaun, thanks for commenting. Perno-gave you a shout out-good luck with the Podcast!
