That was kind of a surprise to me, but the least of the Bears’ worries. On Thursday, the Bears announced that starting guard Ruben Brown was placed on injured reserve with a nagging shoulder injury.
In their statement, the Bears announced that they hope Brown will “come back stronger than ever next year.” But he won’t be coming back to the Bears. He signed a one-year deal for this season, but the 13-year veteran won’t be back with the Bears next season.
This is OK. Sooner or later this season, we would have had to start seeing some younger players, especially on the offensive line. Brown’s replacement is Terrence Metcalf, who has started 14 games in his career. Metcalf signed a long-term contract in 2005, so he was Brown’s replacement next year, anyway. Better to get the future started now.
